Bridging the gap between Developers & Designers to improve user experience

November meeting recap

Did you not get a chance to join the meeting?  Shame on you!

Ok, so the meeting was quite successful though a bit… ok, a lot – heavy on the Silverlight side given that most of our Adobe people were “stuck” (with their arms twisted behind their backs, I’m sure) at Adobe Max (a pretty shiny adobe conference, for those who didn’t know).

Our speakers, John and Erik, talked from very different standpoints around the designer / developer workflow.

John discussed the variety of ways that many product development workshops operate; starting with the solo person in the company who is a one-man band from start to finish of design and development, which often results in a hit to the usability as the one-man-band tries to straddle between both worlds without having the ability to spend the time needed in each area. From there, John went through the various ways that different companies handle the exchange between development and design, the common throw-it-over-the-wall technique, the newly popular 3-step “process” of design – devine – develop and finalized with the light at the end of the tunnel where the designers are able to do more in pure xaml than just looking at it and feeling the desire to flee the room looking for a developer.

Erik talked about more nitty-gritty specifics of the differences between the exchange which occurs in the processes between development and design and how they can interact at the same time – however – the problems which are often encountered when allowing multiple people to “play” at the exact same time working within the same project, and in describing these issues – we discovered that Erik is actually 2 people – as he ran into several issues when switching hats between designer (blend) and developers (visual studios).

Discussions from there were personal reiterations of what was presented and a celebration of the birthdays of 3 attendees to the meet-up.

Oh yes – and much Kool-Aid was passed around.

Next month’s meet is one to not be missed as the mention of having someone talk regarding the design and development of mobile technology made everyone in the room lean forward wanting to hear more.

So join us next month in December and until then, visit us on Facebook, Linkedin and here at SeattleD2ig.org.

I’d like to thank everyone who came out – with a special thanks to John Stockton from Ascentium and Erik and Monica Mork from Sparkling Client for presenting at the November group meet-up, and for David Kelley from IdentityMine for the goodies – cake, Kool-Aid, and Blendables give-away.
